Look through this catalogue for those lectures marked with the video camera icon and listed as Zoom if you need that kind of option, and please note that all Zoom courses are RECORDED FOR ENROLLEES. They can be viewed later even if you’re away or otherwise engaged on the date of your class. Recordings of Zoom sessions will be emailed typically on the afternoon or evening after a class has taken place.

We do appreciate the support of all our students who are keenly aware of the fact that whenever they sign up for a course or donate in any way, they’re helping to sustain the liberal arts and our excellent professors. Although history, literature, art, music, and philosophy are currently under attack at many institutes of higher, you and your professors are keeping these disciplines alive, and The Frick Estate Lectures, now entering its seventh year as a 501(c)(3) is proud to support that effort.

And of course, as we all know, the pursuit of life-long learning such as we provide, is what keeps us all sharper and makes us more interesting individuals. So don’t hesitate to look through the classes offered here for Summer 2026 and sign up for whatever you like. You can do that by simply using the website (www.thefrickestatelectures.org) or calling us at 516-415-1101 and leaving a message – we’ll get right back and register for you by credit card. Checks are also accepted but may be delayed at our P.O. Box in Greenvale, so if you do use the postal mail, either email kay@thefrickestatelectures.org or call our phone number to let us know; that way we can send you the Zoom links when necessary in plenty of time for your class, even if your check is late in arriving.

So take a look and pick out whatever you’d like to enrich your life this summer – we look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,
The Board and Staff of The Frick Estate Lectures

Ghost stories offer more than a good scare. They invite us to think about time, tapping into our anxieties about mortality and the afterlife. They comment on real pain and loss, guilt and shame, love and regret. And they provide a valuable way to examine the horrors of history—from the legacy of colonialism and slavery to gendered violence and economic inequality. Since the eighteenth century, fictional ghosts have also challenged audiences to think about the way present-day choices shape the future. Ghosts can become, in a sense, figures of another potential history—a ghostly history that has never been allowed to happen. They can offer visions of a better society, better community, and better self. His young daughter explains this problem succinctly: in this position, he is “facing the past.” The narrator must face the past via a triangular relationship – the novelist, the narrator himself, and the novelist’s son -- and somehow preserve it. A History of Monumental Landscapes in European and American Art

For much of Western art history, landscape was regarded as a “lesser” genre, ranked below history painting, portraiture, and religious subjects. Yet over time, artists have transformed the depiction of nature into one of the most ambitious and powerful forms of artistic expression. This two-day lecture series traces that remarkable evolution, from the idealized pastoral scenes of seventeenth-century Europe to the sublime visions of the Romantic era and the sweeping panoramas of the American frontier. Through works by Claude Lorrain, J. M. W. Turner, Caspar David Friedrich, Thomas Cole, and Albert Bierstadt, participants will explore how landscape painting grew in scale, prestige, and cultural significance, becoming a vehicle for ideas about nationhood, spirituality, exploration, and humanity’s relationship to the natural world. The series will also incorporate contemporary reinterpretations of the monumental landscape by artists such as Anselm Kiefer and Andreas Gursky, whose works demonstrate how artists continue to use landscape to grapple with history, memory, globalization, and environmental change.
