Although Letts admits that “it did take some doing to not change the play and make it about Trump, in response to Trump,” the play’s political relevance today is more striking (and disturbing) than ever. When viewed alongside Trump’s efforts to reshape American education and to rewrite history, as articulated most explicitly in the 1776 Report and Curriculum, \u003cem\u003eThe Minutes\u003c\/em\u003e offers a powerful reminder of the need for an inclusive, nuanced understanding of history. For Letts, everyone—every nation, every town, every community—has a responsibility for its past and for confronting it honestly. This process begins not by erasing what is uncomfortable and shameful, but by including a range of voices to address past wrongs, to recognize the richness of native cultures, and to fill in the types of gaps found in the 1776 Curriculum. His solution to the nervous conditions afflicting men, which he and Beard called “neurasthenia,” involved the exact opposite. His \u003cem\u003eWest Cure\u003c\/em\u003e encouraged men to work on ranches and farms in order to ride horses, hike, hunt, fish, and camp. In short, they were advised to spend their days outdoors and to journal about it at night. Several problems arise, however. For one, she is not herself religious, is in fact an atheist. Then, the community is not as peaceful as she had hoped. There is a mouse infestation; the discovery of a skeleton; a mysterious stranger arriving among them. This particular assignment is unusually difficult. On what is supposed to be his deathbed, K. J. Boone will not, in the words of Dylan Thomas, “go gentle into that good night” like the majority of Doll’s clientele. Even though he finds fault with most of the institutions of the modern world, Boone believes that that world is better with him in it. When Johnny enters a quiet California town as the leader of the Black Rebels Motorcycle Club, things heat up after Johnny’s rival, Chino (Lee Marvin), wheels into town with his own club, the Beetles (the club from which the Beatles took their name).
