Arguably the greatest painter of maritime subjects in the history of art, J.M.W. Turner reinvented the once-thriving genre of seascape in the 19th century. Renowned for his dramatic depictions of the ocean, Turner’s works often show turbulent and dynamic interactions between water, light, and atmosphere. This two-day lecture will explore some of Turner’s most spectacular works while viewing them in the context of the earlier examples of seascape, which rose to prominence as a genre of art in the 1600s. The course will highlight Turner’s innovative use of color and brushwork, which he utilized to convey the raw power and beauty of the ocean; additionally, the lectures will connect Turner’s innovations to later movements such as Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism.
