Confiscated almost immediately when it was first published in 1790, Journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow was banned almost to the end of the Imperial period in Russia. Part travelogue and part political critique, the book was circulated clandestinely throughout the period it was censored and exerted a profound influence on many major literary figures in the nineteenth century. We will use the Columbia University Press edition: ISBN # 978-0-231-18591-2
