Robert Bolt's award-winning 1960 play explores the tumultuous relationship between Henry VIII and Thomas More as a way of opposing ideas of conscience and convenience, with More retaining and defending his own firm identity as key to his salvation. In Fred Zinnemann's 1966 film—which won six Oscars, seven BAFTAs, and four Golden Globes—Paul Scofield reprises his stage role as More; Robert Shaw is Henry VIII; and Leo McKern is Thomas Cromwell, the King's amoral fixer. Our discussions will include how Bolt's screenplay vastly differs from his original stage play, and whether the moral issues that are central to the story continue to apply to political life today.
