Continuing the exploration begun in Part I of underground characters at odds with
society, we will examine Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, a work which follows a victim of racial discrimination and prejudice who critiques the racial inequities of American society from his underground lair. We will then read Sheman Alexie’s Flight, which traces the adventures through time of a young alienated Native American. We will go on to read Aravind Adiga’s The White Tiger, a scathing satire directed at the injustices of postcolonial Indian society and global economic inequality that follows the path of Balram Halwai, who recounts to the reader over the course of seven nights how murder enables him to achieve financial success and personal fulfillment. We will use the following editions:
Ralph Ellison Invisible Man ISBN# 978-0-679-73276-1
Sherman Alexie Flight ISBN# 978-0-802-17037-8
