Based on actual events, David Lynch's 2000 biographical depiction of Alvin Straight's bold, unusual journey on an old John Deere lawn tractor to visit his estranged brother, who lives 240 miles away in a neighboring state, was filmed in chronological order in all the locations in which the story took place, including scenes with some of Straight's actual neighbors. Starring Richard Farnsworth, Sissy Spacek, and Harry Dean Stanton, the film has been described by Janet Maslin as more about "experiencing each encounter to the fullest than it is about getting anywhere in a hurry. It's been too long since a great American movie dared to regard life that way." A lively discussion will follow the screening.
