Peter Josyph
Set during the infamous Red Scare of the McCarthy hearings in 1953-54, this 2005 film, co-written and directed by George Clooney (who plays producer Fred Friendly), stars David Straithairn as TV host Edward R. Murrow, Frank Langella as CBS chief executive William Paley, Jeff Daniels as the director of CBS News, and Robert Downey Jr. as a CBS correspondent. Paid a total of three dollars for writing, directing, and acting in the film, Clooney, who majored in broadcast journalism in college, mortgaged his house in order to make the film, which he thought was important for addressing the use of fear in stifling political debate, and working against television becoming what Morrow called "merely wires and lights in a box." The film was nominated for 6 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director.
