This two-day lecture will explore the captivating series of paintings Claude Monet created during his brief but transformative stay in Venice in 1908 - currently the subject of an exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. Known for his mastery of light, color, and atmosphere, Monet brought his signature Impressionist style to the canals and architecture of Venice, capturing this oft-painted city in a way that differs from any artists’ depictions before or since. Through a close examination of Monet’s brushwork, color palette, and unique approach to Venetian light, we will uncover how his depictions of the city reflect both the artist’s evolving technique and the timeless allure of Venice itself. High-resolution images will allow for a deep-dive into the beauty of these rarely seen works, showing how Monet’s Venice series pushes the boundaries of Impressionism.
