Thomas Petriano

The Song of Songs—a sensual and sacred poem nestled in the heart of scripture—has long stirred the imagination of lovers, mystics, and liturgists alike. This lecture will explore how its evocations of springtime and human desire transcend the literal to become vessels of spiritual longing and divine encounter. Through lecture, music, and art, we will trace how the Song has been read in the contexts of both Passover and Easter liturgies. Along the way, we’ll consider the role of love poetry in scripture and how ancient liturgies have drawn upon this enigmatic text to articulate the mystery of divine love. In so doing we will allow Song of Songs to become for us a meditation on springtime, love, Easter, and Passover.
