Henri-Georges Clouzot's 1956 Le Mystére Picasso won the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Comprised entirely of footage of Picasso doing his work in front of the camera to music by Georges Auric, and without the interposition of narration, the film offers a rare opportunity to penetrate—or at least observe—some of the mystery of Picasso's great genius as a painter. First we see him working with ink on paper; later he works on two large canvases so that we become cinema eyewitnesses to the scores of alterations that illustrate Picasso's famous dictum that "A picture is the sum of its destructions." A colorful discussion will follow the screening. English subtitles for the occasional dialogue.
