Long before the era of smart phones, “selfies,” and social media, self-portraiture was firmly established as one of art history’s most captivating and intimate genres. For centuries, artists have used their own likeness to comment on everything from personal identity to societal norms; additionally, artists’ depictions of themselves give us insights into broader cultural shifts and artistic movements across time. This two-day IN-PERSON course will explore notable self-portraits from the Renaissance to the present day, showing works from a wide array of artists including Rembrandt, Rubens, Degas, Van Gogh, Hopper, Kahlo, Picasso, Sherman, and many more.
