One of Woody Allen's best films stars Sean Penn as guitarist Emmet Ray, and Samantha Morton as a mute laundress named Hattie. The film follows the ups and downs of their relationship—and of Ray's career—in 1930s Chicago and California. Penn and Morton were both nominated for Oscars, and Morton was nominated for five more awards. Praising Penn's performance as Ray, Roger Ebert said: "You sense that this is a man who was equipped by life with few of the skills and insights needed for happiness, and that music transports him to a place he otherwise can hardly remember." The film also features Uma Thurman, John Waters, Gretchen Mol, and jazz critic Nat Hentoff as himself. A jazzy discussion will follow the film.
