Shot in 1975 with professional child-actors over the course of four months in the French town of Thiers, Small Change became one of Truffaut's most successful films. He had been planning and writing it over the course of 20 years, collecting anecdotes about childhood (including incidents from his own life), but the screenplay left so much room for improvisation that the film had to be cut from 3 hours to 105 minutes. Its main theme is spoken by one of the film's teachers: "Of all mankind's injustices, injustice to children is the most despicable." Roger Ebert rated it his favorite film of 1976. English subtitles. A youthful discussion will follow the film.
