“Fairies have to be one thing or the other, because being so small they unfortunately have room for one feeling only at a time.” – J. M. Barrie, Peter Pan
“Come away, O human child!” – W.B. Yeats, “The Stolen Child”
Fairies are not angels. But are they monsters? Are they cute pixies or dangerous otherworldly beings? Are they insect-sized creatures who sleep in flowers? What do they want from us, or we from them? Just what, exactly, is a fairy? In this class, we will read works of literature about fairies from across time and across cultures, including modern versions that reimagine the fairy. In fun, experimental writing exercises, we will try our hand at writing stories of our own (this part is optional, so feel free to join in whether or not you’re interested in writing).
