This small, gentle, unassuming 1955 film about a lonely, unmarried Bronx butcher surprised everybody by winning 17 international awards, including Oscars for: Best Picture; lead actor, Ernest Borgnine and co-star, Betsy Blair; director, Delbert Mann; and screenwriter, Paddy Chayefsky, who had adapted it from his successful teleplay in which the lead was played by Rod Steiger. Filmed in a total of 19 days and utilizing many locations in the Bronx, Marty is rumored to have been planned as a tax write-off that would never be completed, but it became an instant hit both here and abroad, as well as a resounding box-office success. A lively discussion will follow the screening.
