From its publication in the mid-14th century until the early 17th century, Mandeville’s Travels was one of the most popular and widely circulated medieval texts in Europe. In that time, it was translated into 11 languages and it seems very likely that Christopher Columbus had a copy of the text with him on his 1492 journey. But, since the 17th century, this text has been largely unread and unstudied. Sir John Mandeville’s book describes his journey from St. Albans, England to the Holy Land and to the Far East beyond it, where he finds vast riches, marvels, and monsters. This course will cover the history of travel in the Middle Ages, Medieval genre, and the cause and significance of Mandeville’s Travels’ fall from popularity. Selections of the text will be provided beforehand.
