This second in our trilogy of tributes to the bike on film was directed by Wang Xiaoshuai in 2001 and banned in Mainland China until 2004. Our protagonist, Guei, is 17 when he moves from the country into the big city and becomes a bicycle courier—until his bike is stolen. The film interweaves a series of social and psychological themes that give the image of the bike a compelling complexity depending on what it represents to its various characters. The film won the renowned Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. A lively discussion will follow.
IN CHINESE WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES.
