A fictionalized version of New Orleans D.A. Jim Garrison's attempt to investigate and prosecute the murder of JFK, Oliver Stone's sweeping 1991 epic explores the possibilities for secret, illegal operations within the U.S. government, a topic of interest beyond the issue of whether Lee Harvey Oswald was or was not the sole assassin. Despite wide-ranging criticism, the film was a commercial success; it was critically praised as one of the best films of the year; it received four Oscar nominations; and it features stunning performances from its cast, including Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Bacon, Gary Oldman, Sissy Spacek, Joe Pesci, Donald Sutherland, Ed Asner, John Candy, Jack Lemmon, and Kevin Costner as the crusading Garrison. About the Warren Commission Report, Stone—acknowledging the fictional aspect of the film—said: "In order to fight a myth, maybe you have to create another one, a counter-myth." The film is credited with influencing passage of the Congressional JFK Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992.
NOTE: You should watch this film on Prime prior to the Zoom on 10/15/26, when it will be discussed in depth.
