616. The Five Obstructions

If you'd like to see a film that's not remotely like any other film that's ever been made or will be made, then Danish director Lars von Trier's 2007 The Five Obstructions is just the film for you. Von Trier is so delighted with a film called The Perfect Human, a 1968 black & white short by a mentor and friend of von Trier, Jergen Leth, that von Trier invites Leth to remake the film five times, each time with an obstruction provided by von Trier that is calculated to make it nearly impossible to duplicate the quality of the original, and in fact might ruin whatever they both admire about it. Leth agrees, and the film follows Leth's attempts to accommodate the obstructions. A lively, unobstructed discussion will follow the screening.
