This year, 2026, marks the 80th anniversary of Italy’s national refoundation as a democratic republic in 1946. It also marks the first time women voted in Italy: in a national referendum to choose whether post-fascist Italy would be a monarchy or a republic. Their majority vote won the day for the republic, and their contributions as newly enfranchised citizens guaranteed a Constitution with equal rights for women and ushered in 44 women to the first Parliament. We will reflect on their pivotal role as a bulwark for democracy, recognizing that at this moment women's rights are again at risk and there are lessons to be learned from women's participation in this extraordinary moment in Italian history.
