Amid the many artistic and cultural rebellions between the years of 1900 and 2000, the centuries-old genre of portraiture was dramatically redefined by a wide variety of artists. While photography was increasing its dominance as the go-to medium for recording a person's appearance, many painters found new ways to push the boundaries of visual representation beyond what a camera could record. Incorporating Modernist methods of abstraction, distortion, simplification, and expressive color allowed artists to depict more than what was outwardly visible, and attempt to represent a subject's psychological state, personality, or interior life. This three-day lecture series will delve into an expansive collection of portraits from 20th century artists such as Henri Matisse, Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol, Alice Neel, Lucien Freud, Chuck Close, and many more, with a particular emphasis on self-portraiture.
