Tom Petriano via ZOOM
From the Psalms in the Bible to the sacred rivers in Hinduism, the natural world has been integral to the world’s religions. In spite of claims to the contrary, the world’s religious traditions have much to contribute to preserving our environment. There is a growing realization today that religion, spirituality, and ethics, in collaboration with science and policy, can make a valuable contribution to the problems threatening our planet. This course will look at what indigenous religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Catholicism, and Greek Orthodoxy teach about the sacredness of nature and our moral responsibility to care for it. Consideration will be given to how religion can partner with science in establishing sustainable and ethical environmental policies.
