Eight hundred years after his death in 1226,  St. Francis of Assisi remains one of the most admired figures in world history. Revered by Christians, respected by people of many faiths, and embraced by environmentalists, peace advocates, and seekers of all kinds, Francis continues to speak to questions that are as urgent today as they were in the thirteenth century. This lecture explores the life of the merchant's son who gave up wealth and status to pursue a radically different vision of human flourishing. Through themes of simplicity, peace, compassion, and care for creation, we will consider why Francis's message continues to resonate in an age marked by consumerism, conflict, and ecological crisis. This lecture will include art and music inspired by St. Francis.
