Come to meet the comedian’s comedian and star of vaudeville, film, radio and television - Jack Benny. Loved by millions on radio and television, Jack could get more laughs with silence than most comedians get with a book of jokes. You’ll see why with a classic Jack Benny television episode clip included in this original lecture.

Rising from his humble Orthodox beginnings, he reached the height of radio and television popularity. Was he really “cheap”? Was he really vain? Was he really self-centered? Was he a lousy violinist? Of course not, but he played these parts all so well that people thought those comedic personality traits were true. And that is part of why he was so well loved. He made fun of himself and made you laugh while he did it.

A kind and generous man who helped to break racial barriers, he still sets comedy standards today almost 50 years since his passing.
