“No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream.”
-Shirley Jackson, The Haunting of Hill House
In this class, we will read literature about ordinary, everyday kinds of supernatural experiences. Déjà vu, past lives, minor hauntings, precognition, coincidences that don’t quite seem like coincidence: many people believe in these things or attribute meaning to them, others don’t, while many have a foot in both camps, believing in them while – simultaneously – not. We will read classic and modern stories that take these phenomena seriously, and also have fun with them. Writers may include Victor LaValle, Shirley Jackson, and Yohanca Delgado. In experimental writing exercises, we will try our hand at writing stories of our own (this part is optional, so feel free to join in whether or not you’re interested in writing).
[A Zoom link will be sent to you prior to each session, typically on the day before your class and the morning of your class. If you have any questions or need help getting online, feel free to call us at 516-480-5733 and we’ll get right back to you with assistance.]
