Long Island is home to a remarkable diversity of ecosystems, from coastal shorelines and salt marshes to grassland prairies, oak woodlands, and the globally rare Pine Barrens. Each of these landscapes depends on the native plants that have evolved with local soils, wildlife, and climate over thousands of years. This lecture explores the ecological importance of Long Island’s native flora and how these plants sustain biodiversity, support local pollinators, protect and purify our waters, and strengthen the resilience of our natural communities. Join us for a closer look at the flora that defines our region and discover how planting native species can bring beauty, wonder, and ecological value to your own backyard, while helping protect the future of Long Island’s natural heritage.
